The whole "he chose a sinful life instead of a relationship with his parents and Jehovah" feels a lot like a hostage situation. Do as we say or we'll make sure you'll never see your family again (said with a gun against your head). And all the JV's who readily give up all contact are probably suffering from Stockholm-syndrome....

Today's Watchtower Lesson Really Bothered Me...
by dontplaceliterature ini was a hair away from telling my wife i never wanted to go to the kingdom hall again after today's watchtower.
the conductor mentioned something along the lines of..."if you think having to shun your disfellowshipped children is bad...you should read up on the israelites.
when one of their children was disobedient to the law, they had to take the before the judges so that they could be stoned to death...and guess who's job it was throw the first stone?".

Wives
by flying under the radar ini've been reading posts both here and on other pages about different brothers, both with a high position (like the gb and other bethel-heavies) and "ordinary" elders, and i've gotten a bit curious about their wives.

As a JW Kid Were You Expected To Get Baptised By Your Parents/ Congregation
by Hairyhegoat inhere is a quote from a ex-jw about this subject, i myself had alot of pressure from my family to get baptised and finally gave in at 14, wish i had left them a present on the way out of the pool that floated..at the dudley assembley hall .
i can't justify my entire family (parents, sisters, aunts, uncles, grandma) and friends shunning me because i chose not to uphold a dedication i made at twelve years old.
sure it was my "choice" to get baptized.

I think that even if there is no outspoken preassure to get baptized, you still feel that there is an expectation of it.
I know I did at least. My parents and friends was never on me to get baptized, but I still felt the preassure
from the organization, since you only hear it a million times growing up.
Personally I don't think you should be able to get baptized until your old enough to get married.
You always hear that marriage is the second most important decision you can make.
Just think it's strange that you can make the most important decision (to get baptized) before you're mature
enough to make the second most important deciosion....

There is no reason not to pioneer when you are sick!!!!!!!!!!!!
by life is to short ini just stumbled across this and was flabbergasted it is from the november 1982 km.
" doing good to those with special needs ".
4 it is not unusual for those who are themselves in need to be among the first to respond to the needs of others.

Of course you should pioneer then. You don't have to work if you're on disability...

I find it very interesting that they never say anything about jazz, blues, country,
folk music, classical and opera. Do they know anything about the lyrics, the plot of the operas
or the lives of classical composers? I'm guessing not!
The most ironic part is that I personally know friends who would listen to anything
as long as it was a pan pipe version of it. LOL.

Do they still play the piano during songs at the KH?
by andys ini was just now thinking of this do they still play the piano at the kh or is that part out of there all together also, i have been learning that when you look at a word in the bible many words translated over to hebrew have a deeper meaning for example the word praise a person can just glance at the word and think praise, but there are many hebrew meanings behind the word praise and one of the meanings:.
zamar-to touch the strings or parts of a musical instrument i.e.
play upon it, to make music accompanied by the voice, to celebrate in song and music, give praise, sing forth praises, psalms.

It depends on the congregation. In our congregation we don't have live music but I know other congregation where they have a lot of friends playing different instruments.

When did baptism turn into a wet T shirt contest?
by highdose inat what point did they require people to don a white t shirt?
because lets face it as everyone knows... white t shirts become see-through when wet..... so if they are going for the argument that it protects modesty then thats rubbish, why not insist on a black t shirt that would really do the job?.
instead people get baptised and as soon as they come up from the water whatever they were wearing underneath is there for all to see.. .

Eve: Failing the Single Test She Had
by simon17 inits amazing how things seemed logical when you heard them.
consider the case of eve.
we always here how truly terrible a sin (most likely the unforgivable sin) because she was perfect and given one command.

It feels like everyone has overlooked the psycologiacal side of the story. God said "don't eat the fruit", but the human brain is incapable of processing the word "don't". What the brain registers is "do". That's why you always drop the glass when someone tells you not to... Guess God forgot that part...
